Noticing the season changes

This past week, I’ve been on several five mile walks, including one with friends – ending up in the pub eating delicious food (my favourite destination), one near home and another along the coast in Dorset with my husband. I was so struck in each place by how vibrant the colours of Spring were and how seemingly out of nowhere buds, petals and greenery are just bursting out all over the place!  The blossom, rapeseed, cow parsley, daffodils, lilacs, magnolia trees – all so eye catching.  I’m also noticing so much more bird song.  I love the sound of a wood pigeon in the morning, and in the evenings the blackbirds’ antics make me smile – they’re so vocal and I see them gliding from here to there…sometimes having a bit of a tussle.

It’s felt good to notice these things, rather than rushing around like I normally do!  I was away from my laptop, breathing in the fresh air, and feeling refreshed by the exercise.  So, here’s to slowing down and noticing these little pieces of wonder.

As the Welsh poet W.H. Davies says in his poem ‘Leisure’:-

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
